Cellar jazz club plaque event
The Places That Matter program that’s part of the the Vancouver Heritage Foundation (VHF) will honour the original Cellar jazz club by placing a plaque where the legendary club stood.
Last September, I gave a talk to the Vancouver Historical Society about Journeys to the Bandstand. Part of the talk looked at the Cellar, and in one slide, I asked: “Where’s the plaque?” to recognize the importance of the club in the history of the city’s jazz scene. Jessica Quan, VHF Community Engagement Manager, saw a video of my talk, and after months of planning, a plaque is born!
On June 30, 3 pm, in the parking lot across from where the Cellar was at 2514 Watson St. (from 1956 to 1964), a ceremony will take place to unveil the plaque. A number of people will speak, including Cory Weeds, Nina Horvath (Coastal Jazz & Blues Society), Gregg Simpson who has documented the Cellar on his website, and others including myself.
